Hi friends, I’m excited to announce that I’m releasing my book, Solving Social Media: How the Gospel Gets to the Heart of Our Issues, this weekend!
Now I realize that books are like babies…it’s always easier to be excited about your own than someone else’s. But I think that Solving Social Media uniquely speaks to our cultural moment, both to our struggles with social media in our post-God culture and to how the gospel can transform how we use this incredible innovation.
So what’s this book about? The premise of this book is that our problems with social media start in our hearts, not our phones. Because our hearts are disconnected from God due to sin, we use social media, something that can be a good thing, to try to replace God. So instead of looking to Him for approval, validation, meaning, purpose, and significance, we use social media to try to get these things.
This doesn’t go well, since replacing God with anything will cause all kinds of breakdowns in our individual lives and broader culture. So we struggle with things like performance anxiety, self-rejection, self-obsession, meaninglessness, imposter syndrome, despair, perfectionism, pride, comparison, and envy, just to name a few.
Each chapter then shows how the gospel solves our social media problems by reconnecting us to God and filling our hearts with His love. Through this, we’ll see how we can use social media in a gospel-saturated way, which creates a flourishing culture that brings glory to God.
So that’s why I’ve written this book, to show how the gospel transforms how we use social media. Most modern people think that God and the Bible are out of touch with their current lives. But this book will help you see how only a relationship with God can answer the timeless questions of human experience and satisfy your deepest longings.
So I’d be honored if you bought a copy, because I know there are young (and not so young) people whose lives are desperately crying out for these ideas. And even if you don’t consider yourself a “heavy user” of social media, I know that if you read this book, you’ll have “a-ha” moments about your life. You'll realize that you experience the same struggles, whether you post on social media twice a day or twice a decade.
This book is written in a C.S. Lewis / Tim Keller / Henri Nouwen way, in that it has an apologetic and introspective bent. But I’ve worked hard to polish these ideas so they’re easy to understand and apply to your life. It’s 192 pages, so long enough to develop some depth but short enough to be concise and readable.
You can buy this book below, through my website (Squarespace handles all of the payments). While I listed it on Amazon, the fees there are almost $6 a book, so it doesn’t make sense to pay that much just to fund Jeff Bezos’ next super yacht. Thanks for your consideration!
